The village of Gigondas has been a quality winegrowing area since Roman times and has seen a resurgence in the 20th Century gaining A.O.C. designation in 1971. The region has sandy molasses, clay or old alluvial deposits with shingles and grows wine in a similar style to neighboring Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
