98 Points – M. Chapoutier Ermitage White L’Ermite 2013
Beautiful, with acacia and jasmine notes giving this an almost piercing feel before the core of Jonagold apple, white peach and mirabelle plum quickly fills in behind them. The finish is a rapier,which is amazing considering the depth here, as mouthwatering salted butter and quinine details race through. One of the world’s truly amazing wines. Sleek, with mouthwatering red currant, raspberry and cherry preserve flavors forming the core, while a dusting of cocoa, a snap of red licorice and a long, lingering iron spine complete the picture. Very pure and focused. The minerality wins out in the end. Best from 2019 through 2032.—J.M.

Bristles with energy, as the core of loganberry, raspberry and boysenberry confiture is pushed by lively, brambly structure and enticing notes of anise, singed apple wood and pain d’épices. There’s a lot going on here, so give this time to settle. Best from 2019 through 2030.—J.M.

Racy and tightly coiled in feel, with a bright iron spine and tangy sanguine and pepper notes amid the core of cassis, bitter cherry and damson plum fruit. Shows terrific cut and precision. Minerality courses through the finish. Best from 2019 through 2030.—J.M.

This has a weighty, honeyed feel, with lots of heather, salted butter, warm piecrust and toasted macadamia nut notes leading the way, followed by creamed melon and yellow apple fruit. Lovely twinges of white ginger and mirabelle plum lend cut and contrast at the end. Drink now through 2030. From France.—J.M.
